Sometimes, our dreams are realized in ways that exceed our expectations.
When I dreamed of being a writer, I imagined sharing my voice with others. I never thought it would also lead to becoming a national advocate for patients and families. I’ve been a published writer and journalist for over twenty years with a broad portfolio. Since 2005, I've focused on writing about and working to help families in crisis. I first became an advocate for families dealing with crisis when my son’s challenging 15-year diagnostic journeys began; we were lucky enough to have a happy resolution.
Most recently, I'm as proud of my new column PATIENT NO MORE, as I have been of Dx IQ. Both help patients apply the latest medical diagnostic news to their own care.
I’m thrilled to be a Champion for Patients for Patient Safety US. Plus I’m a member of the Steering Committee of Patient-Partnered Diagnostic Center of Excellence. Both are working effectively at the national level to reduce patient harms. I also served in many capacities for The Society to Improve Diagnosis in Medicine (SIDM) until it closed in the summer of 2024.
My personal mission is to ensure no patient is harmed as we were, unprotected and unarmed. I seek to help educate, empower, and encourage patients to ask questions, pursue answers, access resources, and work together to make healthcare safe for all.
The update on my son: he is healthy, in love, married and working in the field for which he studied. I was only responsible for one of those but I revel in all three. I live in the New York metro area with my husband.
